Synenco Energy Inc. was incorporated in 1999 to acquire and develop oil sands resources in the Athabasca Oil Sands region northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. Since its inception, Synenco has focused on developing the Northern Lights Project.
With this in mind, in May 2005, Synenco and a company called Sinopec, China's largest refiner and marketer of petroleum products, formed the Northern Lights Partnership (NLP). Synenco is the managing partner and holds a 60-per cent partnership interest in the NLP.
Synenco also holds a 100-per cent interest in the McClelland Lease, adjacent to the NLP lands.
February 2008, Synenco announced a narrowed focus of company activities. These activities are: to advance the Northern Lights oil sands mining and extraction application through the regulatory process, to complete the resource analysis following the 2007/2008 drilling program, to complete pilot plant work, and to reinvigorate Synenco's strategic options review process. In March, the company also announced a phased workforce reduction program. The phased plan contemplates reducing the company's workforce, in accordance with the completion of priority work, by 60 to 70 people from the mid-March level of approximately 100, by year end.
Synenco's corporate office is located in Calgary, Alberta.
