About the Project:

The Northern Lights Project is a major oil sands development located approximately 100 km northeast of Fort McMurray, Alberta. This integrated project includes an open-pit oil sands mine, bitumen extraction facilities, and an upgrading plant, designed to produce over 100,000 barrels per day of synthetic crude oil.

Challenge

Synenco Energy Inc. aimed to develop an economically viable, technically feasible, and environmentally responsible oil sands project. The challenge was to optimize bitumen extraction and processing while minimizing environmental impact and maximizing energy efficiency.

Project Results

The Northern Lights Project, estimated at $4.5 billion, reached a major milestone in May 2005 with the formation of the partnership between Synenco and SinoCanada. Synenco, as the managing partner, holds 60% of the project and operates it, while SinoCanada holds the remaining 40%.
